Afghan Civil Society Speak Out on U.S. Policy | by Lisa Schirch

Flikr photo by lafrancevi used under a Creative Commons license.   Based on a survey of nearly three-dozen Afghan civil society leaders, Lisa Schirch, director of 3D Security Initiative, summarizes three main concerns Afghan civil society leaders have for U.S. strategy in Afghanistan.  I. Unintended consequences of the surge Some Afghan civil society leaders warn the surge could be used to recruit for the Taliban.  There is also concern for civilian casualties associated with the surge. II. Greater emphasis on economic development, rule of law, and anti-corruption measures More direct support should be offered to Afghan organizations doing work on the ground in their own communities.  III. Focus on democracy and diplomacy In the case of Afghanistan, careful diplomacy should include dialogue with moderates and extremists to address the concerns and needs of all citizens.
