Algal-Based Biodiesel Makes the Cut
Solazyme has produced the first algal-based renewable diesel fuel to pass the standards of the American Society for Testing and Materials (ATSM) D-975 Specifications. The new fuel, called SoladieselRD, is the first 100% algal fuel and the second type of algal-based fuel produced by Solazyme to meet the requirements of ATSM D-975. According to Solazyme’s press release, SoladieselRD is chemically identical to standard petroleum-based diesel but has lower particulate emissions and meets ATSM standards for ultra low sulfur diesel. What’s more, the new fuel is suitable for existing infrastructure. Solazyme is working towards the commercial launch of their product. If successful, SoladieselRD will help to provide clean energy while lessening the world’s dependence on petroleum and biodiesel alternatives that disrupt global food production.

That seems to be the question. So far, all of the information I've found seems to suggest that it is viable (or at least doesn't suggest that it isn't). Solazyme road-tested SoladieselRD in a Jeep Liberty. Here's a bit more:
