Barton on Pakistan | Boston Globe Op-Ed

PCR Project Co-Director Rick Barton wrote an op/ed for the Boston Globe on "A new course for the US and Pakistan." Addressing the two "near-term crises, parliamentary elections on Feb. 18 and increasing extremist violence," Barton explains how the U.S. could pursue three steps to "set its relationship with Pakistan on a more promising course." He calls for the US to "champion the rule of law," in Pakistan, gain an improved knowledge of the country, and build a trusted partnership with the Pakistani people. Drawing on his expertise in the area and our report, "A Perilous Course: U.S. Strategy and Assistance to Pakistan," we hope you enjoy the op-ed.

Sounds good. I would guess

Sounds good. I would guess one of the toughest parts of the op-ed to implement will be reinstating the judges. There I suppose the question is how much influence does the U.S. wield over Musharraf's government. That said, regardless of outcome, it's an issue we have to push.

The other two recommendations both seem sound to me and should be easier to implement. I'm confounded as to why we didn't do more after the Pakistani Earthquake. Post-disaster aid both tends to be rather effective at helping people in need and has tremendous public diplomacy benefits.
