Bennett Speaks on Media and the War
We are glad to find our Overcoming Extremism conference has continued to generate interest and momentum all over the world, particularly in launching lasting discussions about topics we raised--such as this piece on our "Arab and Western Media Perspectives" panel. Panelist Philip Bennett, Managing Editor of the Washington Post, describes the decrease in reporting on individual victims in recent years, such as Iraqi civilians. He cites a number of causes, such as personal risk to journalists and poor understanding of Islam and Arab cultures, among other factors. Bennett ends with a pledge of remembering his duty as a journalist: "Journalism should be an act against forgetting, and no place more than where violence tries to erase the lives of innocent people."
