Challenge of Migration in the Developing World
The issue of immigration policy continues to receive wide attention in the United States; however, mass migration is also a challenge in the developing world. A recent article in The Economist discusses how low and mid-income nations around the globe receive a constant influx of migrants looking for work and better opportunities.
According to the article, in 2005 two World Bank researchers estimated that two in five migrants—about 78m people—were outside rich countries.
Along with economic and security issues, many scholars anticipate that environmental changes will further spur migration in years to come. This argument was supported by the 2007 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report, which concluded that shifts in climate will likely impact population migration in the future.
