Dealing with Energy Security and Climate Change Simultaneously

Check out this policy brief from the CSIS Energy and National Security Program and the World Resources Institute. The 12 page report seeks to establish a framework for considering the complex links between energy security and climate change as the world must meet the increasing energy needs of a growing and developing world population while mitigating the impacts of global climate change. The authors identify three challenges:

  • the evolving and interconnected nature of energy security and climate change definitions and goals,
  • the variables that contribute to an uncertain future, and
  • the trade-offs and unintended consequences involved in addressing both issues.

They then go on to offer guiding principles for addressing these challenges, including adapting a global and integrated approach, promoting but not depending on technological break-throughs, and integrating change with other political priorities.

Neat! I particularly liked

Neat! I particularly liked Figure 1 on page 3 which goes over the range of possible impacts based on how much the temperature rises.
