Events in China Reveal Fervent Nationalism
Take a look at this story from Foreign Policy. On Sunday an American was attacked in Zhuzhou, China outside of a Carrefour store, a French supermarket chain rumored to “support” the Dalai Lama. Mistaken for a Frenchmen, he was surrounded by an angry mob and was lucky to be saved by local police. Across the country Carrefour stores have been the site of protests over the past week, forcing the Chinese government to come to its defense and to try to dampen the anger of its citizens. These events point to the power of Chinese nationalist sentiment. As China’s economy continues to grow, its citizens' nationalist views could play a larger role in world politics. How might it effect the Olympics, for example?
