Exploring Karachi
NPR aired a segment this morning on rural migration to Karachi, a city whose population has ballooned to upwards of 12 million people. NPR's Steve Inskeep will file reports from Karachi all week, kicking off a new series that explores urban life around the world. The Urban Frontier is inspired by the passing of the milestone of half the world's population living in cities. Today, a recent arrival is profiled - he is from northwest Pakistan and found work driving an ambulance for $82/month after three days of training. His experiences, and near brush with death, highlight the city's complicated ethnic makeup and the challenge of delivering services to such a large and shifting population.
