Globalisation Institute’s Person of the Year

The Globalisation Institute recently named Charlie McCreevy, the European Commissioner for the Internal Market, as its 2007 Person of the Year. McCreevy was chosen because of his leadership in promoting a better future for Europe. He has pushed for free-market reforms and a decline in protectionism, which he claims are some of the biggest threats to European economies. According to McCreevy,

Many people in Europe believe that by keeping things as they are and keeping up the barriers, you're going to protect your citizens. All evidence would suggest to me that this is the wrong policy prescription. It slackens economic activity... [and] then more people become unemployed. When one country starts, others retaliate.

The President of the Globalisation Institute praised McCreevy saying, “his vision will deliver greater prosperity and better jobs for Europe’s citizens." For more information, click here.
