Increasing Numbers of Iraqis Fleeing Their Homes
We keep reporting on this, but there are a lot of consequences for the kind of increased displacement that's going on in Iraq. Roughly 2 million Iraqis have fled the country (refugees) since the US invasion in 2003, with at least an additional 2 million displaced within the country (internally displaced persons, or IDPs). This NYTimes story reports on data from the Iraqi Red Crescent Organization and the International Organization for Migration (IOM - which, incidentally, is not a part of the UN as the article states, but that's a common misconception). Most importantly, the rates of displacement have increased since the surge began, with mixed neighborhoods giving way to homogenous areas where Sunni and Shia do not mix. The case for partition, soft or otherwise, may begin to make itself.
