James Traub’s The Freedom Agenda

James Traub of the New York Times Magazine will be at CSIS on October 20th to discuss his new book, The Freedom Agenda: Why America Must Spread Democracy Just Not the Way George Bush Did, with Alex Lennon, director of the Democracy Promotion in Future U.S. Strategy project. The book documents and evaluates the Bush Administration’s efforts to promote democracy abroad, gathered largely from interviews with key administration officials. Traub emphasizes the importance of spreading democracy but urges exercise caution in U.S. efforts. He writes, "our own security depends on the progress of liberty,” just not with a "heavy-handed and often bellicose" approach. If you would like to attend please RSVP to prcproject@csis.org.
