E-mail: fpjobs@brookings.edu Fax: 202.797.2479 Mail: The Brookings Institution HR - Job 10808 1775 Massachusetts Ave, NW Washington, DC 20036 Basic Function Principally responsible for providing research and research coordination assistance for the Research Director of the Center on the United States and Europe (CUSE) and other Brookings scholars in the development of timely and quality research and publications on the international mission in Afghanistan; supports and takes part in the Brookings research agenda on Afghanistan under the guidance of the Research Director; occasionally performs administrative tasks for the Research Director and other scholars working on Afghanistan. Education/Experience Requirements M.A. in international affairs, political science, public policy or related area required. In-depth understanding of Afghanistan, counterinsurgency, peacekeeping, and European politics/NATO preferred. Superior academic record, outstanding research, writing, and analytical skills required. One year of substantive professional research experience required. Knowledge Requirements Superior qualitative research, writing, and editing ability. Excellent organizational, reasoning, and analytical skills and acute attention to detail; ability to understand foreign policy issues and concepts and to convey them effectively through verbal and written communications; good interpersonal skills; Experience in Afghanistan and professional proficiency in Afghan languages preferred; poise, flexibility, discretion, and mature judgement to handle and respond appropriately and professionally in a fast-paced and high-pressure atmosphere; ability to proactively set priorities and multitask efficiently; independent ability to identify and address new responsibilities; ability to effectively utilize the Internet as well as strong proficiency in Microsoft Office software. Infrequent international travel may be required as part of this position. Principal Duties and Responsibilities 80% Research Assistance: Researches and collects data on a variety of issues concerning the international mission in Afghanistan, including, but not limited to, NATO, counterterrorism, international public opinion, counternarcotics, public opinion in Afghanistan, Afghan-Pakistani relations, and humanitarian issues. Collects and coordinates Brookings Foreign Policy research on Afghanistan.   Collects and analyzes information; reviews and assembles relevant literature materials, including press reports, publications, government data, documents, and reports from a wide variety of sources, including but not limited to: Afghan and international NGOS, library and Internet searches, statistical databases, news sources, journalists, diplomats, and others in the field. Writes reports and maintain databases on findings; briefing memos; reports on forums, symposia, and conferences; compiles abstracts, summaries, and analyses of books and articles. Monitors and summarizes current developments in relevant research areas, helps to identify potential speakers for events. Updates and checks existing data and footnotes; assists with editing and proof reading of publications. Attends conferences and seminars as needed; attends and writes summary reports of outside policy briefings, forums, and symposia. Maintains spreadsheets and databases of relevant officials, experts, journalists, and others. 20% Administrative Support: In conjunction with CUSE Center Coordinator, assembles travel reimbursements for staff. Liaises with website coordinator to obtain and post articles, papers, and speeches by scholars, affiliated scholars, and Visiting Fellows. Makes travel arrangements and handles other logistical matters for scholars working on Afghanistan. Coordinates research efforts, networking activities, schedules, and programmatic duties.
