Program on Humanitarian Policy and Conflict Research (HPCR) at Harvard University Job Opening: Program Associate Distance Learning, Community of Practice and Evaluation, Full time position Location: Cambridge, Massachusetts Description: The Program on Humanitarian Policy and Conflict Research at the Harvard School of Public Health is searching for a candidate for the position of Program Associate to coordinate and develop its activities in the fields of distance learning, community of practice and project evaluation. The Program is a leading research and policy center on conflict management, humanitarian protection and peace building. It focuses its research and policy activities on the elaboration of sustainable strategies to protect civilians in times of conflict as well as the development of transformative approaches to policy making and the creation of communities of practice. The Program was established in 2000 as the result of joint efforts by the United Nations, the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs and the Harvard School of Public Health. The Program Associate will support the research agenda of the Program in these fields and provide technical support in the design of research initiatives, the collection of data, analysis of results and the drafting of publications. Specific duties of the position are, but not limited to, the following: Distance Learning: 1. Coordinate the development of distance learning curricula within the Program scope of activities; 2. Maintain and develop the technological capabilities of the Program in its use of commercial platforms in the production of distance learning modules; 3. Assist in the recording, editing and publication of distance learning modules, in close cooperation with Program partners. Community of Practice: 1. Coordinate the development of community of practice activities in cooperation with Program's partners, in particular virtual social networks platforms and webcast events; 2. Coordinate activities of the Program and its partners in the use of community-based tools, in particular ensure standardized quality and strategic relevance across community platforms and online events; 3. Development and implement communication strategies to promote usage of the community tools; 4. Organize and produce webcast events at Harvard and with key partners around the world. Evaluation: 1. Maintain and develop evaluation tools to measure the performance and impact of distance learning and community of practice activities; 2. Collect and analyze data measuring the performance and impact of Program activities; 3. Draft and edit scientific material for publication on distance learning activities and community of practice under the scientific leadership of the Program Director; 4. Assist the Director in the production of evaluation tools for other areas of activities of the Program. This is a term position though 12/31/2009 and will be continued dependent on continued grant funding. Requirements: - Bachelors degree, preferably in an area or areas related to Program interests - Three to five years of relevant experience in a project development and coordinator position, particularly in the fields of continuing education or distance learning. - Demonstrated experience in the use and management of web-based information management platforms, including websites, web portals, virtual network tools, web teaching tools, web conferencing, VoIP, etc. - Demonstrated ability to collect and analyze data, design evaluation tools and produce statistical results. Exposure to the work of international organizations, humanitarian agencies and civil society organizations, particularly in conflict areas is a definite asset. - Excellent verbal and written communication skills required, including solid proofreading ability and command of English grammar and spelling. Knowledge of French is an asset. - Must be a problem-solving, flexible and creative individual, able to work under pressure and at ease with partners around the world. Ability to work independently and to flourish in a dynamic and collaborative team environment is also required. Must be willing to work occasional evenings and weekends when special events are scheduled. International travel may occasionally be required. - Excellent knowledge of standard Microsoft Office software is required, in particular Word and Excel. Excellent skills in publication software such as PowerPoint, PhotoShop and Adobe. Good knowledge of web-related applications, web-design and html is required. - Background and/or work experience in public relations, fund raising, or events planning, and bi-lingual or multi-cultural skills, are also strong pluses.
