Research Associate position (scroll down on link)– Future of Peace Operations program at the Henry L. Stimson Center. The Henry L. Stimson Center, a nonprofit public policy institute committed to finding pragmatic steps toward ideal objectives, seeks a full time research associate for the Future of Peace Operations program to work on issues related to peace operations, with a focus on genocide prevention and the protection of civilians by peacekeepers and military forces. The position also involves looking at conflict prevention and post-conflict rule of law issues, the United Nations and other multilateral organizations, and US and international policies in these areas. This research associate position will support, lead and implement key components of research, writing and advocacy projects that advance knowledge, debate and policy-making related to these issues. MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES • Manage substantial portions of ongoing projects (e.g., design and coordinate literature reviews and research initiatives; maintain project deadlines and calendar of activities; oversee project budget plans; liaise with partners and funders) • Conduct original research and analysis • Track reports, research and news developments in issue areas; monitor and evaluate developments in key areas; and flag timely data and information • Participate in and summarize findings from meetings and assess applicable to project work • Organize roundtables, meetings, workshops, and other special events; coordinate event and travel logistics • Develop and draft written materials, including occasional papers, commentaries, reports, articles and issue briefs to disseminate research findings and policy options; draft written correspondence and articles for the web; proofread and copy-edit project publications • Participate in program strategic thinking process, including brainstorming project ideas • Assist in hiring and providing day-to-day management of interns • Evaluate and suggest new areas or components for research and outreach agenda to advance the goals and objectives of the projects • Assist with prospective funder research and preparation of funding proposals and follow-up reports • Serve as liaison when assigned to external audiences, including preparation and delivery of formal presentations on project work • Maintain program web-site, respond to information requests and coordinate media outreach, including mass mailings • Participate in the life and activities of the program and of the Stimson Center The research associate will carry out other job-related duties as requested by their supervisor, subject to reasonable accommodations. QUALIFICATIONS • Substantive knowledge of some aspects of the following: international peace and stability operations; genocide prevention, and/or protection of civilians; multilateral institutions, especially the United Nations and regional organizations, such as the African Union; understanding of US policymaking systems; familiarity with academic and research literature on conflict and security; knowledge of non-governmental organizations in peace and security field; knowledge of military and defense policies • Graduate degree with relevant research or Bachelors degree with three-four years of relevant experience • Ability to work independently and to work well with peers in a team environment • Superior research and writing skills; ability to verbally articulate ideas in presentations • Demonstrated ability to handle a large number of ongoing activities and to prioritize accordingly, often under deadline • Solid interpersonal skills and cultural sensitivity a must • Personal commitment to and interest in the substantive work of the program • Enthusiasm, flexibility, humility and good humor essential HOW TO APPLY Qualified candidates are invited to email a resume, cover letter and salary requirements to resume@stimson.org.
