External Vacancy Announcement The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is seeking a Senior Protection Assistant for its Regional Representation in Washington, D.C. TITLE:    Senior Protection Assistant CATEGORY / GRADE: General Service (GL-7) TYPE OF APPOINTMENT: Fixed-term appointment until 31 December 2009 with possibility of renewal  DUTIES:  • Contribute to the development of a strategic protection framework in the country of assignment. • Assist in refugee status determination by gathering information, e.g. from country of origin, in order to make recommendations based on UNHCR guidelines. • Follow up on protection issues with relevant local authorities, including court cases involving refugees. • Maintain liaison with camp officials, other officials concerned with protection issues, including those in the judicial system. • Assist in monitoring and analyzing country specific and international legislation and practices to ensure that up-to-date information is provided to the Office. • Assist in the promotion of international refugee law, capacity building and training of Government officials at the country level. • Maintain good relations with members of the legal profession and the civil society as well as with local authorities. • Performs other duties as required. POSITION REQUIREMENTS:  Completion of Secondary education. A certificate/training in International Law, Political Science or related field required. Eleven years of relevant job experience. Excellent knowledge of English and knowledge of French or Spanish essential; and proficiency in both French and Spanish desired. Excellent communication skills and good working knowledge of Computer applications desired.
