Karin von Hippel in the News: The State of Afghanistan
Karin appeared on WorldFocus yesterday to discuss the current situation in Afghanistan: the uptick in violence and military casualties, upcoming elections, and the strategic surge in the south.
"Unfortunately, I think [the increase in casualties] was anticipated. Not only is summer the fighting season in Afghanistan, but also we're starting to deploy an additional 21,000 U.S. troops, the Europeans and other NATO allies are bringing in extra troops for security for the elections. The military leadership anticipated more casualties because there will be more fighting. Now, the hope was that the greater fighting will provide greater security in the long-run."
