The Mayor of Karachi

In the second part of the series, NPR profiles the person tasked with managing Karachi's growth and development, the city's energetic mayor, Syed Mustafa Kamal:

The mayor of Karachi, Pakistan, is a player in a brutal political game: the fight for control of one of the world's most crowded cities. Syed Mustafa Kamal says he wants to reshape his sprawling, dirty city once known for its green, leafy parks. Since the population exploded, it has become better known for neighborhoods that stretch for miles in every direction. To do so, he must overcome a legacy of bad government — and violence.

One colorful anecdote illustrates the mayor's hands on approach:

Kamal says he wants Karachi to be a model for development, and that he is "cutting and pasting" ideas from different parts of the world. For example, rains often flood Karachi's streets during the monsoon season. So the mayor went around London videotaping storm drains. Trash is also an issue in a place as dense as Karachi — "My city is a dirty city, it's not clean. Garbage is the main problem," Kamal says — so he studied the way it is collected in Shanghai, China, and plans to implement a similar system this summer.

Well done, and keep it

Well done, and keep it up.
One thing i wanted to bring your attention if you make a forum or any organization open for every body to bring their ideas like young scientists, or anybody can have any brilliant idea in his head but some time they need some encouragement and support. In very developed countries they still run so many programmes to encourage their youth and everybody to think, or lets start a research centre where every body can bring his ideas and if there are any professional scientist, engineers to consider and work on them and support those people with their technical know how will be much much beneficial to country. I beleive we are full of talented people but they just need some encouragement and right guidance.

DOING GOOD JOB.

DOING GOOD JOB.

We visited Karachi and

We visited Karachi and Islamabad after a few years recently. We were very pleased to see the constructions of connecting bridges and fly overs to facilitate the flow of traffic in Karachi. It was also very encouraging to see a very beautiful park at Clifton. We were happy to see the dedication and care shown to Karachi.

Thank you Mr. Mayer (Kamal Mustafa) for an excellent job. Please keep up the good work because the city really needs you.

One thing which disappointed us (my husband & myself) most was the presence of trash of all kinds on the beautiful beaches around Clifton. I was very tempted to start cleaning it myself but did not know where to dump when there is no trash cans around. Please consider to provide some help to keep the beaches clean.

May Allah bless you with long and healthy life to keep serving the nation of Pakistan.

i am not a resident of

i am not a resident of Karachi so i dont know how good this Kamal is for Karachi development, but i think saying something about pushtons means he wantS riots in karachi, which is not good for Pakistan, Karachi and its residents.
in karachi there are 5 or 10 ethinic groups but look at London, Mumbai and other big cities, more than 100 ethinic groups
the difference is that the people of these cities are wiser than that of Karachi
riots mean killing innocent people
MQM YA ANP KA KOI NAHI MARAIGA
MARAIGA AAM ADMI

SO PLEASE SOCHO. BE A MUSLIM AND AHUMAN BEING

To Ayub and his comments

To Ayub and his comments about Kamal Sahib.

The mayor has done a wonderful job in Karachi and we respecct him a lot, Kamal says he wants Karachi to be a model for development and we support him.

As for Pushtons, aren't they the core of all tension in Pakistan and Afghanistan.
You mention at the end that he will serve a ten years sentence for insult to an ethnic group, did Pushton pay for insulting other ethnic groups in Afghanistan.

You said he has to promot multicultralism, I don't think he needs to do that, if we give Pushtons rights just like Afghanistan, we will face the same faith, Pushtons will stay in power forever and Panjabis and Sendis will be treated like Tajeks and other ethnics are under Pushton rule in Afghanistan.

Pakistan is for Panjabis not Pushtons and Pushtons are terrorists of South Asia. Reality is hard but try to swollow it with glass of cold water.

Kamal we the citizen of Karach are weith you and support you unconditionally.

He cannot clean up the

He cannot clean up the garbage as long as he is spewing garbage himself aganist an entire ethnic group of people. This is what he says about the Pashton residents of Karachi

"These Pashtuns means like fundamentalist — religiously fundamentalist, religiously extremist," Kamal says. "They are coming in. When it comes to ethnicity, when it comes to Islam they all are ... the same."

"The man who's coming in front of you ... look at him, look at his face," Kamal says.

The mayor knows that he is a son of immigrant himself, which does not even go two generation back. Instead of promoting multiculturalism, peace and harmony among different etrhnic and linguistic groups, he dubbs an entire population of three milion residents of his city as terriorists and fundamentalists.

If he was a mayor of any town in a cvilized country, he will not be serving as mayor but serving a ten years sentence with a hefty compensation for the insult and damage to an ethnic group.
