PONI Fall Conference Panel 3 Recap

Panel 3’s topic of “preventing nuclear proliferation” spurred an interesting discussion among participants about some of the relevant tools that can be used to stop nuclear proliferation. In the counterproliferation department, there was a robust discussion of the past, present, and future prospects for the PSI to help curb the spread of sensitive weapons and related technology. The other large strategy discussed was economic sanctions. Panelists and guests explored what type of sanctions are most likely to have success and how best to calibrate and sequence the mix of sticks and carrots when trying to influence an aspiring nuclear states’ decision-making.
