Rick Barton nominated to be U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Economic and Social Council
Rick Barton, Codirector of the PCR Project, has been nominated by President Obama and Ambassador Susan Rice to be U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). ECOSOC is the primary organ for discussing international economic and social issues, and formulating policy recommendations on these issues for the United Nations and ECOSOC’s 54 member states. Its goals include promoting higher standards of living, full employment, and economic and social progress, identifying solutions to international economic, social and health problems, facilitating international cultural and educational cooperation, and encouraging universal respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms.
On November 4th, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee held a hearing for presidential nominees, chaired by Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ) and Ranking Minority Member Senator Richard Lugar (R-IN).
