Schlesinger report faults Pentagon nuclear oversight

In response to multiple embarrassing nuclear mishaps by the Air Force in managing U.S. nuclear weapons, the AP reports the Schlesinger task force is set to release its report today. Beyond the Air Force failures, the report argues that DOD as a whole has deemphasized the nuclear mission. Specific recommendations to remedy the problem include:

  • The Pentagon creates a new assistant secretary position to oversee its nuclear management.
  • Allow the Pentagon to maintain its commitment to U.S. allies.
  • The Joint Chiefs of Staff play a larger role in the oversight and management of the nuclear arsenal.
  • The Air Force converts its existing Air Force Space Command into a new entity that would be held accountable for the efficacy of the nuclear mission.

Will these measures be effective to help restore effective nuclear oversight? What other measures should be taken. Stay tuned throughout the day for updates as events warrant.    UPDATE: Here is the Los Angeles Times article discussing the report and the lack of focus on deterrence by the Pentagon.
