Soon Most Humans Will Have Cell Phones, says UN

The UN telecommunications agency reported that sometime this year the number of cell phone users on planet Earth will surpass the number of non-users.  The number of users has grown at an astronomical rate; in 2000 only 12% of people had one.  It is expected that early this year the total will surpass 50%, or about 3.3 billion people.

According to the Washington Post, "Ownership rates in developing countries are rising fastest, with Brazil, Russia, India and China alone accounting for 1 billion subscribers last year."

This is certainly an important milestone in the history of communication.   For more, check out what blogger, Daniel Drezner has to say about it.
