Study “Halves” India’s HIV Rate
According to a not yet released national health survey funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the number of people infected with HIV/AIDs in India is much lower than the previously estimated 5.7 million. Early analysis of the data shows that the number infected is actually somewhere between 2 and 3 million. Although this is good news, Ashok Alexander, director of Avahan, the Indian AIDS program of the Gates Foundation, worries that "a complex epidemic is being reduced to a soundbite."
