UN Official Discusses Promise and Peril for the Future of Peacekeeping

Yesterday Jean-Marie Guéhenno, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, spoke at CSIS as part of our ongoing Smart Power series. Mr. Guéhenno discussed the past and future of peacekeeping operations, touching on the dramatic failures of the 1990s, such as Rwanda and Somalia, and the resurgence and successes of the past decade. He outlined some of the challenges facing UN peacekeeping, such as lack of resources and will, but also expressed optimism about the future.  He underlined the continuing importance of peacekeeping operations.
