Whats Happening at the World Bank?
The World Bank has a Conflict Prevention & Reconstruction Unit, which hopes to provide "guidance on integrating a sensitivity to conflict into World Bank activities, including through conflict analysis aimed at optimizing policy and project design in conflict-affected countries." A compilation of working papers done by the unit is definitely worth a read: CPR and Related Publications on Conflict and Development. Interestingly, CPR formed the CPR Network, creating an informal network of donor countries and partner UN Agencies dealing with the complex issues of conflict management. The World Bank expanded its conflict-focused efforts when on, "July 1, 2007, the Fragile States team in the Operations Policy and Country Services Vice-Presidency was joined by staff from the Conflict Prevention and Reconstruction Unit, formerly located in the Sustainable Development Network." "The merger of the two teams creates the Fragile and Conflict-Affected Countries Group, responsible for the development and implementation of the joint agenda on conflict and fragility across the Bank and for promoting the overall effectiveness of the World Bank’s response to fragile and conflict-affected countries."
