2010 PONI Summer Conference

July 22 – 23, 2010

at Sandia National Laboratories

The CSIS Project on Nuclear Issues (PONI) held its Summer Conference from July 22-23 at Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, NM. The conference marked the second conference of the 2010 series, which consisted of three regional conferences - held on the east coast, west coast, and in the United Kingdom - leading up to our year-end Capstone Conference at Offutt Air Force Base (home to U.S. Strategic Command) in Omaha, Nebraska. The Summer Conference featured panel presentations addressing the following topics:

  • Addressing the Nuclear Security Challenges Posed by Non-state Actors
  • Perspectives on the Future of Nonproliferation and Disarmament
  • Aligning Technical Capabilities and Nuclear Policy Goals
  • Nuclear Weapons and Strategic Competition
  • Nuclear Arms Control Opportunities and Constraints

It also featured a keynote remark by Dr. C. Paul Robinson, President Emeritus, Sandia National Laboratories.

The 1½-day event began early on Thursday, July 22nd and concluded after lunch on July 23rd. A reception and dinner followed the conclusion of panel discussions on day one. The event at Sandia, which is in proximity to Los Alamos, allowed the event to include more participation from the technical community, though the focus of the presentations remained largely on policy issues. The conference included unclassified and classified tour options at the end of day two.
