  • karzai.jpgAfghanistan President Hamid Karzai (l) discussed the U.S.-Afghanistan partnership in the run-up to Afghan presidential and parliamentary elections on June 14 at CSIS. Karzai highlighted reconstruction progress; touted the new constitution; addressed the effects of poppy production and militias on Afghanistan's stability; and called for increased international aid. "We have a higher capability today to absorb the international assistance and spend it," Karzai said. "And our demand from the international community is that we would welcome assistance directly through the system of the Afghan government, and we are capable to manage it and spend it, and we will make sure that transparency is there and that accountability can be there."
