Set against the backdrop of fiscal austerity throughout the world, the landscape of development assistance is changing. For governments, attempting to accomplish broad development goals with diminishing resources requires innovative approaches and maximizing the impact of each development dollar spent. Corruption at various levels of the aid delivery process hampers the effectiveness of this assistance and hinders what is already often a tough sell by governments to their legislatures to support foreign aid.

The World Bank Group, through its policy advice, lending practices, research, enforcement, and convening power, seeks to reduce corruption in developing countries. Within the World Bank, the Integrity Vice Presidency spearheads anti-corruption and transparency efforts. World Bank contributions in this sphere include a number of notable anti-corruption campaigns, such as the Stolen Asset Recovery Initiative (StAR), the Open Development platform, and the International Corruption Hunters Alliance.

In his first public speech on anti-corruption, Dr. Kim will discuss the challenges and opportunities around transparency in development, including ongoing efforts and successes. The panels will explore two important sides of the anti-corruption discussion: how corruption risks can be managed, and the costs of corruption to the effectiveness of development.
