The Abuja Declarations, which established global commitments and targets to fight HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and other infectious diseases, have been marked by considerable success as well as significant shortcomings. Ten years after the initial declaration, CSIS welcomes Dr. Luis Sambo to offer thoughts on the progress that has been made and the challenges that remain. Dr. Sambo has been the World Health Organization’s Regional Director for Africa since 2005 and was recently reappointed to a second five-year term. A native of Angola, Dr. Sambo has worked in several health-related fields for both the WHO and the Angolan government.
