Australia and the United States in the 21st Century

Please join us for an important speech by Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop. While the Australian-U.S. alliance is foundational for both countries, the partners are now facing the challenge of coordinating a proactive response to the emerging trends of the 21st century, including the increasing geopolitical importance of the Indo-Pacific region.

The Hon. Julie Bishop was sworn in as Australia's first female foreign minister on September 18, 2013, following four years in the role of Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade. In addition to being Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ms. Bishop is Deputy Leader of the ruling Liberal Party and has served as the Member for Curtin in the Australian House of Representatives since 1998. Ms. Bishop has also served on a number of parliamentary and policy committees including as Chair of the Joint Standing Committee on Treaties.
