Avian and Pandemic Influenza: Bamako Conference Briefing

  • Monday, Dec 18, 2006
  • The effort to contain avian influenza's spread and to prepare for a possible human pandemic is a global one. Since the October 2005 meeting of the International Partnership on Avian and Pandemic Influenza in Washington, major international conferences have taken place in Beijing (January 2006) and Vienna (June 2006), and most recently, a ministerial meeting and donor conference December 6-8 in Bamako, Mali.

CSIS hosted a presentation on the results of the Bamako conference and the global status of avian and pandemic influenza preparedness and response. The presenters were leading members of the U.S. delegation to the Bamako conference:

Ambassador John E. Lange, special representative, avian and pandemic influenza, U.S. Department of State

Dr. Kent Hill, assistant administrator, Bureau of Global Health, U.S. Agency for International Development

Dr. Ron DeHaven, administrator for the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS)
