The Banyan Tree Leadership Forum with K Shanmugam, Foreign Minister of Singapore

The CSIS Sumitro Chair for Southeast Asia Studies is pleased to invite you to a Banyan Tree Leadership Forum featuring Mr. K Shanmugam, Singapore’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Law. Mr. Shanmugam will discuss Singapore’s bilateral relations with the United States, regional relationships, and the opportunities and challenges facing Singapore. Singapore is celebrating 50 years of independence this year.

Mr. Shanmugam studied law at the National University of Singapore. He was admitted to the Singapore Bar as an advocate and solicitor in 1985. Mr. Shanmugam went into private practice and became one of the Senior Partners and head of Litigation and Dispute Resolution at Allen & Gledhill LLP. In 1998, he was appointed a Senior Counsel of the Supreme Court of Singapore at the age of 38, one of the youngest lawyers to be so appointed. On May 1, 2008, Mr. Shanmugam was appointed a Cabinet Minister. He is now the Minister for Foreign Affairs and the Minister for Law. He has also served as the Minister for Home Affairs.
