Building a Career Overseas with USAID

In this Careers in Development session, Herbie Smith and Tamra Halmrast-Sanchez will discuss their experiences working with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) overseas and the specific challenges faced in Yemen. They will offer advice to young professionals who may be considering work in conflict-affected states as well as offer insight on the future of international development work.*

Herbie Smith has been with USAID since 1979, working in various capacities for USAID's Office of Food for Peace as well as country offices in Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iraq, Afghanistan, Lebanon, Yemen, and Haiti. Tamra Halmrast-Sanchez has been with USAID since 1987, serving with the Office of US Foreign Disaster Assistance in various roles and currently serves as the Deputy Director to the USAID Mission in Yemen, a mission that has been operating in Sana'a since 2003 with a focus on primary education, maternal and child health, agriculture, economic growth, and democracy and governance.
