China's Policy toward Southeast Asia and Her Relations with ASEAN

The relations between China and members of ASEAN have greatly developed since the end of the Cold War, particularly since the beginning of the 21st century, which has stimulated discussion and debate among experts, scholars and officials both in Asia and abroad. China's intentions in the region are not well understood, however. Nor is the long-term impact of China's growing influence in Southeast Asia on the interests of extra-regional powers like the United States.

Dr. Ma Ying of the Shanghai Institute of International Studies and one of China's leading scholars on China's relations with ASEAN, presents her views on the contents and characteristics of China's policy toward Southeast Asia, the impact of China's relations with ASEAN on East Asia, and China's interests in Southeast Asia.
