A Conversation with Andres Velasco, Former Chilean Finance Minister and Presidential Candidate

September 30, 2015 • 9:00 – 10:00 am EDT

For the past two weeks, all eyes have been on Chile as it works to recover from a devastating earthquake. But the country's problems stretch beyond the recent natural disaster. The past year has seen the Chilean economy falter, even as corruption scandals wreak havoc on both sides of the country's political spectrum. President Bachelet's government is endeavoring to prove its trustworthiness even as Chileans have less confidence than ever in their elected officials.

Join us as we explore what's next for Chile in the context of all these challenges. We're happy to host former Chilean Finance Minister Andres Velasco, who will share his thoughts on how the country might move forward and restore prosperity, stability, and faith in government. CSIS Americas Program director Carl Meacham and senior associate Robert Funk will serve as discussants.
