CSIS Forum on Advancing U.S. Leadership in Global Health

March 7, 2011 • 8:00 – 10:30 pm EST

U.S. leadership, so fundamental to the historic global health achievements of the past decade, is being put to the test by today’s rising political and budgetary turbulence and increasingly polarized debate over how best to advance America’s global goals. On March 7th CSIS convened key officials from government, members of the CSIS Commission on Smart Global Health Policy, and other leading experts for a discussion on how to preserve and build upon the legacy of U.S. bipartisan support for global health. The gathering examined the achievements of the last decade and looked ahead to strategies for achieving future success. Commission Co-chairs Dr. Helene D. Gayle and Admiral William J. Fallon (ret.) hosted the Forum, joined by CSIS President and CEO John Hamre.

The above video, On the Ground with GHI in Kenya, was shown at the March 7th event.  In December 2010, the CSIS Global Health Policy Center traveled to Kenya to assess how the Global Health Initiative (GHI) is taking shape. The above video captures the opinions and perspectives of people trying to implement GHI while looking at some of the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

Participants of the March 7 event included:

Congressman Keith Ellison (D-MN)

Ambassador Mark Green, U.S. Global Leadership Coalition
Ms. Lois Quam, Executive Director, Global Health Initiative

Dr. Tachi Yamada, President, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

Members of the Commission on Smart Global Health Policy
