CSIS Statesmen's Forum Hosts Recep Tayyip Erdogan

Recep Tayyip Erdogan, chairman of Turkey's recently victorious Justice and Development Party (JDP), spoke at a CSIS Statesmen's Forum on Monday, December 9. Erdogan, in his first Washington appearance since the JDP's landslide victory, discussed the goals of the new administration and Turkey's prospects for EU membership. He also addressed the critical Cypriot question and shared his views on the evolving Iraqi crisis, "Naturally, Turkey's preference is for war to be the last resort. However, if Saddam's administration continues to protect developments, which threaten world peace, then Turkey will give the necessary support for the implementation of the last UN resolution."
