Data Analysis in the Government

  • There is growing interest in – and concern about – government use of data mining and pattern recognition techniques, in particular for national security.  While some proposals have incited considerable discussion, the debate has not always been fully informed about the techniques involved.  Mary DeRosa led this series to bridge this information gap about data mining – what it is, what it can do, and what it cannot do.  This kind of understanding is necessary for informed policy decisions about government use of these techniques.  The series looked at both the challenges and benefits of government use of data mining and pattern recognition techniques for enhancing homeland security.
