The CSIS Kissinger Chair hosted Dr. Edward Luttwak, CSIS Senior Associate on the occasion of his new book, The Grand Strategy of the Byzantine Empire. Luttwak discussed how the Byzantines’ strategic thinking evolved over the years and applies today to statecraft and war. In his book, Luttwak argues that the endurance of the Byzantine Empire was due its remarkable ability to adapt and maximize their use of persuasion as power, despite their lack of military strength.
