Do African Children Have an Equal Chance?

March 31, 2015 • 2:30 – 4:30 pm EDT

A Human Opportunity Report for Sub-Saharan Africa

A child's opportunities early on in life can make or break their chances to become a thriving, successful adult—and access to the most basic, vital services is often unequal, determined by gender, ethnicity, geography, economic circumstances, or other inherent factors. Please join us for the launch of a new World Bank report, "Do African Children Have an Equal Chance? A Human Opportunity Report for Sub-Saharan Africa," which looks at the changing opportunities for children in Africa. The report focuses on efforts to build future human capital both directly—through education and health investments—and indirectly—through complementary infrastructure such as safe water, adequate sanitation, and electricity. Report authors Andrew Dabalen and Ambar Narayan from the World Bank Group will present the report's key findings, and the panel will explore how this knowledge can be translated into effective, targeted program design and policy making that can help level the playing field for children across the region.
