Maria Toyoda is Associate Professor and Chairperson of the Political Science department at Villanova University. Her research and writing focus on the causal mechanisms of financial liberalization; the politics of development aid; the mobilization of postal savings and government financial institutions for policy financing in Japan; and banking and regulatory reform in Japan. In 2006-7 she was a Council on Foreign Relations/Hitachi International Affairs Fellow in Tokyo, Japan, where she spent time as a visiting researcher at the Japan Bank for International Cooperation.
In 2008 the Japan Chair at CSIS in collaboration with the Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership launched the Japan Policy Fellowship Program, an initiative to strengthen links between U.S. scholars of Japan and various stakeholders in the Washington, D.C. policy community.
