The CSIS Energy and National Security Program is pleased to host a roundtable discussion of the implications of emerging market demand for the near and longer term global energy outlook. Joyce Chang, Managing Director and Global Head of Research at J.P. Morgan Chase & Co., will discuss the headwinds and tailwinds facing large emerging markets – especially China – and the implications for global energy demand. Though many commentators expected non-OECD oil demand growth to compensate for flat OECD demand, China’s recent economic slowdown is throwing such predictions into doubt, raising serious questions about for exporters about the security of demand. Chang will examine the drivers of oil demand in China and other emerging markets, and discuss how slowing economic activity may impact that demand. Should non-OECD demand growth fail to materialize and OECD demand remain flat, exporters will need to adjust their strategies to cope with an overabundance of supply. Daniel Ahn, Senior Advisor to the Chief Economist at the U.S. State Department, will address the implications of persistent low demand for exporter strategy. Catherine Wolfram, Faculty Director at the Energy Institute at Berkeley’s Haas School of Business, will discuss recent debates about whether or not oil demand growth is decoupling from GDP growth across non-OECD countries. Sarah Ladislaw, Director and Senior Fellow with the CSIS Energy and National Security Program will moderate.
