    Francis Ghiles is one of the leading European experts on the Maghreb. A senior fellow at the European Institute of the Mediterranean, Ghiles specializes on security, energy, and political trends in North Africa and the Western Mediterranean. During his distinguished career as a journalist he spent 18 years writing for the Financial Times, and also freelanced for a number of newspapers including the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Le Monde. He has published numerous articles in French, English, and Spanish and is a frequent commentator in print and broadcast media. Ghiles earned advanced degrees at St. Antony's College, Oxford and the University of Keele.
