EU Data Privacy Rules for a Digital Economy

May 21, 2013 • 8:00 – 9:30 pm EDT

The EU Rendez-Vous series features senior European and American leaders discussing the 21st century's most significant issues, from foreign policy and the global economy to energy security, human rights, and culture.  Through candid and vibrant debates about issues facing the transatlantic relationship today, EU Rendez-Vous events strengthen the enduring relationship between the United States, the European Union, and the EU's Member States. More personal data is being generated, collected and processed than ever before. The potential for increase in growth and competitiveness that flows from these developments is immense, but data-driven opportunities are not without risk and uncertainties. Strong, reliable and consistent rules are therefore essential for the digital economy to grow. The EU is currently debating a proposed privacy regulation, which seeks to update the EU's existing 1995 data privacy regime affecting the commercial sector, to meet the challenges of the new digital economy. This event will offer the opportunity to hear how senior regulators on both sides of the Atlantic as well as a major global player in the IT industry are addressing common challenges.
