HIV/AIDS in Russia

  • Wednesday, Apr 27, 2005
  • Russia should make HIV/AIDS a national priority and upgrade its public health systems to battle the epidemic, according to the executive summary of a new report by the CSIS Task Force on HIV/AIDS. The group calls for the United States to increase HIV/AIDS assistance to Russia while working with the country to formulate a comprehensive response to the disease. The report, which will be released in full this spring, is the product of a joint CSIS-Brookings Institution delegation that traveled to Russia in February to meet with government and health officials. Peter Piot, executive director of UNAIDS, and Celeste Wallander, director of the CSIS Russia and Eurasia Program, participated in the April 27 rollout.
