The Intersection of Health and Gender in a Transitional State: the Case of Russia

This presentation examines the gender-related features of the health crisis in Russia which has produced the largest gender gap in life expectancy in the world. Stress and negative health lifestyles are the two most likely causes of the long-term adverse longevity pattern in. However, this development cannot be clarified by a simple cause and effect explanation.


William C. Cockerham is Distinguished Professor of Sociology and Interim Chair of the Department of Sociology and Social Work at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, with secondary appointments in medicine and public health. His Ph.D. is from the University of California at Berkeley. Among his recent books are Health and Globalization (Polity, 2010), Medical Sociology, 11th edition (Pearson Prentice-Hall, 2010), and the New Blackwell Companion to Medical Sociology (Wiley-Blackwell, 2010).

He is the former President of the Research Committee on Health Sociology of the International Sociological Association (2006-10) and member of the Editorial Board of the American Sociological Review (2008-11). He has published extensively on the Russian health crisis.
