Frederick Barton, codirector of the CSIS Post-Conflict Reconstruction Project (l), Anthony Cordesman, CSIS Burke Chair in Strategy (c), and Jon Alterman, director of the CSIS Middle East Program (r), analyzed Iraqi Prime Minister Allawi's visit to the United States and U.S. policy toward Iraq on Sept. 22. "The key to Allawi’s political success will be to establish himself with Iraqis as an authentic Iraqi patriot, and not the puppet of a U.S. government that has failed in so many important ways in Iraq," said Alterman. "He must show he is leading Iraq, not being led from Washington, and doing so will be difficult."
