Irreconcilable Differences? The Rule of Law vs. Democratization in China

  • The symposium examined the findings of a just-published book edited by Suisheng (Sam) Zhao of the University of Denver, titled, Debating Political Reform in China: Rule of Law vs. Democratization. Four leading experts on the rule of law and democratization in China presented their views on these questions. They were:

    • Dr. Suisheng (Sam) Zhao, professor and executive director, Center for China-US Cooperation, Graduate School of International Studies, University of Denver
    • Dr. Jerome Cohen, professor of law, New York University School of Law
    • Dr. Stanley Rosen, professor and director, East Asian Studies Center, University of Southern California
    • Dr. Tianjian Shi, associate professor, Department of Political Science, Duke University

     

    Mr. Carl Minzner delivered the keynote remarks. He is the former senior counsel at the Congressional Executive Commission on China. He is now the Council on Foreign Relations Visiting International Affairs Fellow with CSIS's Freeman Chair in China Studies.

    Bates Gill, director of the Freeman Chair in China Studies, moderated the event.
