  • CSIS's Middle East Program released the new book Arab Reform and Foreign Aid: Lessons from Morocco at a luncheon at CSIS.

Jon Alterman, director of the Middle East Program, co-wrote the book with Haim Malka, a fellow with the program, based on a trip they led to Morocco early this year with a dozen representatives of think tanks and universities from the United States and Europe. Given the high amount of interest in the issue of Arab reform in both the United States and Europe, the group explored U.S. and European efforts to promote positive change in Morocco, and how those efforts affected ongoing Moroccan efforts at reform. Over the course of the trip, they group spoke with more than 150 people from across the political and social spectrum, as well as all the key players in the international community. The resultant book analyzes Morocco's prospects and makes constructive suggestions for how international cooperation can help maximize Morocco's opportunities for success. The project was a joint effort of CSIS's Middle East and Europe programs.
