Mauritania at the Crossroads

October 31, 2012 • 2:00 – 3:30 pm EDT

Democracy and Security in the Sahel

with

Jo Ellen Powell
U.S. Ambassador to Mauritania

As the international community wrestles with the profound shifts resulting from the Arab Spring and the political, security, and humanitarian crises in Mali, little attention has been given to the impact of these dynamics on nascent democracies. Mauritania, which experienced a coup d'etat in 2008, continues to grapple with its autocratic history as it faces crucial challenges, including violent extremism and security in the Sahel and a humanitarian crisis. Please join the CSIS Africa Program as we host U.S. Ambassador to Mauritania Jo Ellen Powell for a discussion on ongoing political developments within Mauritania and the implications for the broader region.

Please RSVP to Patrick Pratt at africa@csis.org
