  • CSIS's Africa Program hosted a discussion with Professor Maurice Iwu, chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission of Nigeria, focused on preparations for the upcoming 2007 presidential elections. Professor Iwu discussed the importance of using electronic voter registration and voting in order to reduce human error during elections, ensuring accurate registration and identification of voters, and providing immediate and reliable results from local poling stations. He stressed that, with proper preparation and logistical planning, Nigeria could avoid the credibility problems of 2003 and hold a credible, free, and fair election.
